PPS—for high-temperature-resistant components that come into contact with food or drinking water
In addition to the more than 250 available PPS grades, DIC Corporation is introducing the new product DIC.PPS FZ-2140-F3 BLACK. This glass-fiber-reinforced polyphenylene sulfide has been developed to meet all requirements for food contact applications as specified in European Directive EU 10/2011 and by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Food contact approvals
All ingredients in DIC.PPS FZ-2140-F3 BLACK are listed in EU Directive 10/2011 and its amendments regarding plastics and articles intended to come into contact with food.
The PPS polymer (CAS No. 25212-74-2) used in the formulation of the new grade is listed under Food Contact Notification (FCN) 1731. Based on the formulations provided by the suppliers of the other ingredients, DIC.PPS FZ-2140-F3 complies with applicable FDA regulations and is therefore suitable for articles intended for repeated contact with all types of food, under conditions of use A through H as described in Table 2 of Regulation 21 CFR 173.300(d).
The new Grade is also approved by NSF under NSF/ANSI 51 for food applications.

Drinking Water Approvals
In addition to food-grade approvals, DIC.PPS FZ-2140-F3 BLACK complies with all relevant regulations for drinking water applications.
The product is certified for contact with drinking water in accordance with the European standards ACS, WRAS, DVGW Worksheet W270, and KTW, as well as the American standard NSF/ANSI 61. DIC.PPS FZ-2140-F3 BLACK thus complements the existing DIC.PPS portfolio for drinking water applications.
In addition to material approvals, existing food and drinking water laws require processors to provide evidence that the manufactured products comply with defined migration limits.
In addition to approvals for food contact and drinking water applications, the new material offers the proven, typical properties of PPS, such as excellent resistance to heat, chemicals, and hot water, as well as low creep. The polymer is inherently non-flammable and is listed by Underwriters Laboratories as UL94 V-0 without the addition of any flame retardants. This unique combination of outstanding properties gives developers in the food industry design freedom and, as a result, significant cost savings in a market with continuously increasing regulatory restrictions.
Plastoplan Kunststoffe is responsible for the distribution of DIC.PPS in Austria.
